Characteristics

Perennial, tufted, up to 1 m high. Leaf blades up to 600 mm long, up to 1.5 mm wide, dead leaves breaking off above sheath mouth and remains curling into a tight spiral. Spikelets 15-17 mm long (including awns), 6-8 mm wide (including awns). Panicle dense, 150-250 mm long; spikelets 2-4-flowered; glumes 11-13 mm long, 1-nerved; lemmas 7.5-9.0 mm long, including lemma lobes which are adnate to central awn for a quarter to three-quarters of their length, ending in a short bristle; lemma body with 3 unequally spaced tufts of white hairs on either side of central nerve, the most basal tuft being marginal and closer to base of lemma than other 2 tufts which are equidistant, or almost so, from lemma base; central awn 12 mm long.

Inflorescence dense, 150-250 mm long. Spikelet 15-17 (including awns) x 6-8 mm, 2-4-flowered; glumes 11-13 mm long, 1-nerved (short lateral nerves near base); lemma 7.5-9.0 mm long, with 3 unequally spaced tufts of white hairs on either side of the central nerve, and two tufts of hair on either side of central nerve near the margins, the most basal tufts are on the margins; lobes adnate to the central awn for 1/4-3/4 of their length, ending in a short fine awn; central awn 12 mm long; anther 1.7-2.6 mm long.
