Plants mat-forming into compact clumps, 10–15 cm high, many cm long. Culm internodes 1–2 mm long. Leaves: sheath 4–5 mm long, 8–9-nerved, mostly glabrous and smooth; ligule a fringe of hairs, c. 0.2 mm long; blade 9–17 mm long (including pungent apical spine of c. 1 mm), c. 1.3 mm wide, long-acuminate, mostly coriaceous to indurated with cartilaginous base, 7–9-nerved, mostly glabrous, hairy near ligule, with minutely scaberulous or smooth margins. Panicles prominently exserted, finally open, c. 10 mm long, 3–10 mm wide, with flat glands; peduncle 1.5–5 cm long. Glumes equal to or slightly shorter than florets, ovate or broadly ovate, 0.5–1 mm long, obtuse or truncate, mucronulate, 1 (–2)-nerved.
