Characteristics

Plants 5.5–11.5 cm high, many cm long, with prop roots to 30 cm long. Culm internodes 0.75–1 mm long. Leaves: sheath c. 4 mm long, 7–9-nerved, glabrous, scaberulous on the margins; ligule a fringe of hairs, 0.2–0.5 mm long; blade 15–33 mm long (including pungent apical spine of c. 0.5 mm), 1.5–2 mm wide, long-acuminate, coriaceous, 7–10-nerved, glabrous, spiny-scabrid on margins. Panicle prominently exserted, 15–25 mm long, 7–15 mm wide, with flat black-red glands on divisions. Glumes longer than florets, ovate-oblong, c. 1 mm long, subacute to obtuse or truncate, entire or denticulate, muticous or mucronulate, 1-nerved. Lemma ovate, 0.5–0.8 mm long, obtuse, membranous, with 1–3 ribbed nerves. Palea nerveless. Caryopsis almost spherical, c. 0.5 mm long, reticulate.
