Characteristics

Plants 17–20 cm high, forming compact mats several metres long. Culm internodes c. 1.5 mm long. Leaves: sheath 3–4 mm long, 5–7 (–9)-nerved, glabrous, smooth (including margins); ligule a membrane or fringe of hairs, c. 0.2 mm long; blade 7–10 mm long, 0.3–1 mm wide, shortly acuminate, stiffly herbaceous, 3–5-nerved, pilose with tubercle-based hairs or almost glabrous, scabrous. Panicles 6–10 mm long, 3–8 mm wide, glandular or eglandular. Glumes longer than florets, ovate-oblong, 1.25–1.5 mm long, divaricate, acuminate to obtuse, 1-nerved, the nerve prolonged into a terete, often curved, scabrous spine 0.2–0.5 mm long. Lemma oblong, c. 1 mm long, obtuse, notched into 2 obtuse lobes, mucronulate in sinus, hyaline, strongly 3-nerved. Palea usually nerveless. Caryopsis ellipsoid, c. 0.5 mm long, striate.
