Characteristics

Plants 4–10 cm high, to 1 m long. Culm internodes 0.2–0.3 mm long, usually ribbed, pallid. Leaves: sheath 2.5–3.6 mm long, 3-nerved, mostly glabrous, smooth (including margins); ligule a fringe of hairs, 0.25–0.4 mm long (sometimes glabrous); blade 5–10 (–15) mm long, 0.3–1 mm wide, acute, coriaceous, 5–7-nerved, pilose with stiff simple and tubercle-based hairs or glabrous, usually scabrous. Panicles 7–15 mm long, 3–15 mm wide, eglandular. Glumes shorter than, to as long as, florets, ovate-oblong, c. 1 mm long, acute to broadly obtuse, mucronulate, 1-nerved or 3–5-nerved, ciliolate or glabrous. Lemma obovate, c. 1 (0.1–1.3) mm long, subtruncate, erose-denticulate on apical margins, membranous to hyaline, 6–9-nerved. Palea 5–7-nerved with 1–3 intercarinal nerves, undivided. Caryopsis ellipsoid-obovoid, 0.75–0.9 mm long, reticulate.
