Characteristics

Dioecious, densely-branched, prostrate shrubs. Juvenile and adult leaves similar. Adult leaves scale-like, imbricate, decussate, obtuse, with a rounded dorsal keel. Male and female cones solitary, terminal on normal vegetative shoots. Female cones comprising 20 or more closely imbricate, fertile scales which become fleshy and scarlet at maturity; ovules inverted and partly covered by the epimatium.
