Characteristics

Woody herb or shrub, often with scandent branches, to 2.7 m high; young stems sulcate, puberulous.. Leaves: petiole 2–8 mm long and puberulous to pubescent, the blade thin, (broadly) ovate, 1.5–4.5(–6) cm long, 0.6–3.3 cm wide, cuneate, rounded to subcordate at base but near the petiole briefly cuneate, margins sinuate-dentate with 2–7 callous-mucronate teeth on each side (rarely subentire), apex acute or apiculate, pilose and slightly glandular on both surfaces or scabridulous above.. Capitula 4–6 mm long, in globose cymes with 4–8 capitula, these cymes solitary or 2–3 together in leafy panicles, terminal on branches; capitula on puberulous or pubescent stalks 1–5 mm long, bracteoles subulate, 2–3 mm long; phyllaries 28–30, ± 3-seriate, green with white membranous margins, narrowly elliptic, the outermost smallest, 1.5–5 mm long, 0.4–0.7 mm wide, acute or acuminate, pilose and fimbriate.. Flowers faintly scented; ray florets white or cream, 13–28, with a pubescent tube 2–2.5 mm long, ray 1.5–4 mm long, 0.2–0.7 mm wide, notched at the apex, style 3.2–4.5 mm long with linear arms; disc florets greenish, 5–9, tube 3–3.7 mm long, puberulous, with 5 glandular lobes 0.5–1.2 mm long; anthers 1.5–2 mm long with narrowly triangular terminal appendages; style 4.4–4.7 mm long with flattened papillose arms.. Achenes narrowly oblong, 0.7–1.3 mm long, 5-costate, pubescent; pappus of white or tawny barbellate setae 3–5 mm long.
