Characteristics

Shrubs or climbers. Leaves alternate, simple, entire or serrate. Capitula in ± paniculate corymbs or cymes, the individual capitula heterogamous, radiate (but the ray sometimes very inconspicuous); phyllaries multiseriate, the outermost shortest; receptacle flat, epaleate. Ray florets female, 3–4-seriate, the rays white, short and very narrow, 2–3-toothed at the apex; disc florets few to many, hermaphrodite, tube cylindric proximally, distally campanulate with 5 recurved lobes; anthers obtuse at base, with an ovate appendage at the apex; style arms linear in ray florets but in disc florets lanceolate or conical distally and papillose around the distal part. Achenes narrowly turbinate, slightly 4-ribbed, slightly compressed, pubescent; pappus 1-seriate, of many very slender barbellate setae.
