Characteristics

Leaves 5–9-foliolate; petiole 2–8 cm long; rachis 4–7 cm long; leaflets 3–16 × 2.8–10 cm, oblong to obovate or ± round, sometimes acute (rarely in Flora Zambesiaca area) to rounded or shallowly emarginate and sometimes very slightly acuminate at the apex, rounded at the base, densely pubescent to glabrescent in mature leaf; lateral nerves 7–11 on each side, reaching the margin; stipules 0.6–1 cm long, oblong; petiolules 5–8 mm long; stipels minute or absent.

Corolla mauve; standard 1.7–1.8 × 1.4–1.5 cm, ± round, emarginate at the apex, densely brown-silky outside, glabrous inside, with 2 thickened vertical folds at the base, claw 3–3.5 mm long, pubescent; wing-blades c.11 × 5 mm, ± oblong, rounded at the apex, pubescent at apex and on auricle, the claw 6–7 mm long and slightly hairy; blades of keel petals 10 × 6 mm, mostly silky, the claw 5 mm long and slightly hairy.
Inflorescences almost sessile, pseudoracemose, borne in pairs or clusters before the leaves appear or just as they develop, 4–25 cm long on short leafless shoots or at the base of leafy shoots; nodes 1–2 mm long, 1–3-flowered; bracts up to c.1 cm long, linear; pedicels up to 5 mm long; bracteoles 6–8 mm long, linear.
Seeds brown-black, placed transversely, 1.2–1.4 × 1.1–1.2 × 0.4 cm, compressed ellipsoid, ± pitted, with a circular aril produced into a ligulate process, appressed against the funicle which is much dilated proximally.
Pods chestnut coloured, very compressed, 1–4-seeded, 9–11.5 × 2.2–2.5 × 0.4 cm, oblanceolate, widest near the apex, narrowed and without seeds towards the base, densely pale yellow-brown pubescent.
Branches, foliage and inflorescence axes densely yellow-brown pubescent, the upper surface of the leaves eventually glabrescent but velvety silky all over when very young.
Calyx pubescent; tube 4–5 mm long; lowest tooth 3–4 mm long, triangular-acuminate; lateral teeth 2 mm long, broadly triangular, upper teeth united almost to the tip.
Ovary 6–7 mm long, 9–10-ovuled, pubescent; stipe 1–2 mm long; style 1 cm long, curved through 90° near the middle; tip incurved with stigma facing downwards.
Stamen sheath 1.2–1.4 cm long with free parts 3–4(7) mm long; upper stamen free at base; anthers 0.8 mm long.
