Characteristics

Leaves (11)13–17-foliolate; petiole 1.5–6 cm long, sparsely to densely rusty pubescent; rachis 5.5–19(24) cm long; leaflets thin, 1–9 × 1–3 cm, elliptic-oblong or elliptic with the basal pair rounded-ovate, subacute to acuminate at the apex, asymmetrically cuneate or rounded at the base, glabrous on upper surface and practically so beneath or appressed silky ferruginous on both surfaces, later glabrescent; lateral nerves 8–9 on each side, not reaching the margin; reticulate venulation prominent beneath; stipules 3–7 mm long, ligulate, very deciduous; petiolules 3–4 mm long; stipels 1–3 mm long, filiform, or absent.

Corolla showy, purple or blue with yellow patches at base of standard; standard 1.4–1.9 × 1.2–1.6 cm, almost round, white silky outside, tapering into the 3–5 mm long claw, folds and appendages lacking; wing blades 12–13 × 4–6 mm, oblong, glabrous except at apex, with claw 6 mm long; blades of keel petals similar, 12–13 × 6 mm, glabrous, with claw 5–6 mm long.
Inflorescence (8.5)12–25 cm long including peduncle 1.5–13 cm long, sparsely rusty pubescent; cymule rachis stout, 4–7 mm long, 2–4(5)-flowered; pedicels (2)6–10 mm long, with red pubescence; bracts 2 mm long, triangular subulate; bracteoles 0.7–1 mm long.
Ovary 1 cm long, linear, with short spreading yellowish hairs, (6)8–9-ovuled; style 1.1 cm long, pubescent at the base, curved through 90° at the middle.
Stamen sheath 1.5–1.7 cm long; free parts of filaments (2)3–4 mm long; upper filament free or adhering near the middle; anthers 0.6–0.7 mm long.
Young branches dark grey, sparsely rusty pubescent; older branches grey with elliptic lenticels, noduled and ridged.
Calyx sparsely rusty-pubescent; tube c.4 mm long; teeth 1–1.5 mm long, broadly triangular, obtuse.
Pods brown, 10–16 × 1.4–2.4 cm, linear-oblong, deflexed at the apex, 2–6-seeded, glabrescent.
Shrub or small tree, 1.8–17(25) m tall, sometimes many-stemmed.
Seeds blackish, 9 × 7 mm, compressed oblong-ellipsoid.
