Characteristics

Leaves 7–17-foliolate; petiole 2–3(5.5) cm long; rachis 8.5–16(20.5) cm long; leaflets (1)1.5–7(10) × 0.8–3.5(4.7) cm, upper leaflets oblong, obovate or elliptic, but the basal ones relatively broadly ovate, broadly elliptic, oblate or ± round, shortly acuminate at the apex with the tip rounded, truncate or emarginate, asymmetrically cuneate at the base, glabrous to reddish pubescent; lateral nerves c.5–7 on each side, not reaching the margin; stipules very deciduous; stipels 0.5–2 mm long, filiform; petiolules 2–4 mm long, pubescent.

Corolla purple-blue or rose-coloured; standard 1.1 × 1.3 cm, cordate, not thickened or folded at the base, thinly white silky outside; claw 2–3 mm long; wing-blades 8–10 × 3.5–4 mm, narrowly oblong, pubescent at the tips with claw 6.5 mm long; blades of keel petals 10 × 5.5–7 mm, oblong-elliptic, pubescent at the tips, with claw 5.5 mm long.
Inflorescences axillary, 12–14(16) cm long; the individual cymules 0.1–2.5 cm long, 1–3-flowered; bracts up to 1 mm long, ligulate, deciduous; pedicels 0.4–1.3 cm long; bracteoles c.0.5 mm long, ovate.
Ovary 8 mm long, silky with long appressed hairs save at tip, 5–8-ovuled; style glabrous, c.8 mm long, curved through 90° near the middle but often curved back through 180° after flowering.
Shrub or small tree (2)3–7(10) m tall, sometimes many-stemmed and thicket-forming; bark light grey or mottled light grey with darker round flakes, smooth; buds small, rounded.
Pod 4–11 × 0.8–1.15 cm, linear-oblong, densely silky pubescent or sometimes ± glabrescent at maturity, glabrous and deflexed at the tip.
Stamen sheath 1–1.3 cm long; free parts of filaments 2–4 mm long; upper filament free at base; anthers 0.7 mm long.
Calyx glabrous save at margins, or pubescent; tube 3 mm long; teeth up to 0.5 mm long, broadly triangular.
Seeds ± black, 5–6 × 2 mm, discoid; funicle dilated proximally.
Flowers scented.
