Characteristics

Stems 20-55 cm tall, pilose. Leaves fairly close to scattered, opposite or irregularly inserted throughout the stem, the flowering part not well defined and leaves sometimes present between the flower fascicles. Leaf-lamina 20-50 x 1-5 mm, linear, subsessile, pubescent to pilose. Flowers 3-5 in a terminal umbel and usually also in fascicles at 1-2(-3) nodes below; internodes in inflorescence 8-70 mm long; pedicels up to 17 mm long. Calyx segments 4-6 x 1.5-2 mm long, dorsal surface with a dense indumentum of stiff patent hyaline hairs and thin appressed brown hairs, ventral surface pilose with appressed brown hairs near the apex. Corolla lobes 7-8 x 4-4.5 mm, convex and reflexed at anthesis, brownish green; dorsal surface with a dense indumentum of stiff patent hyaline and thin appressed brown hairs. Corona comprising 5 erect fleshy ± circular lobes 2.5-4 mm high, each bearing on its ventral side a stout subulate appendage that curves up and out over the lobe; lobes green or white and green, appendage purple or brown. Anther appendages 1.25-1.7 mm long, undulate; corpusculum 0.3-0.38 mm long; pollinium 0.63-0.93 mm long. Fruit 3.5-7 cm long with bristles c. 2 mm long; surface whitish pubescent. Seed c. 2.5 mm long; coma creamy white, c. 25 mm long.
