Panicle narrowly ovate to narrowly oblong, 25–40 cm. long; racemes 1–7 cm. long, usually much shorter than the supporting branches.. Spikelets 3–5 mm. long, the callus bearded with violet-tinged hairs from 1/2 to nearly as long as the spikelet; lower glume light brown, glabrous to thinly pilose; upper lemma entire or minutely bidentate, with a straight awn 1.5–6 mm. long..
