Characteristics

Annual herb, erect, to 60 cm high. Stem scapiform; foliose part pilose; bracteate part glabrous, rarely hispidulous, often glaucous. Leaves with upper two pairs appearing whorled, lanceolate to linear, 5–70 mm long, 1–15 mm wide, pilose to glabrescent. Flowers in terminal and axillary umbellate clusters on progressively longer pedicels, rarely solitary; pedicels to 130 mm long. Calyx cylindrical, glabrous, rarely hispidulous, glaucous; tube 2.5–4.5 mm long; lobes 1–1.5 mm long. Corolla white or cream; tube 7–14 mm long; lobes 1.5–8 mm long. Stamens 4.5–9.5 mm long; anthers minutely apiculate; dehiscence extrorse. Capsule globular to ovoid, c. 5 mm long, often glaucous; fruiting style 6–8 mm long.
