Characteristics

Annual herb, erect, to 45 cm high, usually hispid or hispidulous, with leaves glabrous or glabrate. Stem scapiform. Leaves lanceolate to linear, 4–27 mm long, 1–10 mm wide. Flowers in few-to many-flowered compact or lax terminal and axillary simple and compound umbellate clusters; pedicels to 8 mm long. Calyx campanulate, papillose-squamulose, rarely glabrous; tube 0.8–1.9 mm long; lobes 1–2 mm long. Corolla white with orange striations; tube 3–6.5 mm long; lobes 1.5–2.5 mm long. Stamens non-functional and 1.5–2 mm long, or functional and 2.5–3.5 mm long; filaments pilose at base; anthers obtuse; dehiscence extrorse. Capsule globular to ellipsoidal, 2–3 mm long, papillose-squamulose; fruiting style 2–2.5 mm long.
