Characteristics

Annual herb, erect, to 65 cm high, glabrous or finely squamulose. Stem scapose. Leaves ovate to broadly lanceolate or elliptic, 4–30 mm long, 2.5–15 mm wide. Flowers in terminal and axillary compound umbellate clusters; pedicels to 40 mm long. Calyx cylindrical, the 3 nerves to each lobe usually thickened; tube 2–3 mm long; lobes 1–2 mm long. Corolla white or lemon yellow; tube 10–20 mm long; lobes 10–18 mm long. Stamens fertile or reduced to staminodes; filaments free or partly or wholly adnate to tube, 8–14 mm long with bulbous bases; anthers obtuse; dehiscence latrorse. Capsule globular, 4–5 mm long, glabrous or minutely scabrous in upper part; fruiting style 7–10 mm long.
