Characteristics

Perennial, caespitose, hummock-forming. Leaves: ligule a row of hairs; blade woody, pungentpointed, initially flat but becoming folded with age. Inflorescence a panicle. Spikelets compressed laterally, disarticulating above the glumes; floret 1, bisexual; rachilla a minute, naked extension above the floret. Glumes acute, awnless. Callus long, pungent. Lemma 3-nerved with 2 minute, membranous lobes, 1-awned; awn arising from the notch, long, ±circular in T.S. Palea nearly equal to lemma, 2-keeled. Stamens 3. Grain ellipsoid.
