Characteristics

Perennial shrub to 6 m tall; stems cylindric, pubescent. Leaves petiolate; petioles 8 cm or more long, pubescent; lamina c. 12 cm or more long, broadly ovate, apex acuminate, cordate and abruptly cuneate and with a pair of auricular ±oblong lobes c. 1.5 x 1 cm at the base, margin serrate-crenate, deeply sinuately and ±palmately lobed c. ? of the way to the midrib, lobes acuminate or obtuse often with smaller secondary lobes, densely pilose above, shortly grey-tomentose below, 3-5-nerved from near the base. Capitula in terminal corymbose panicles c. 25 cm in diam.; peduncles up to c. 5 cm long, densely pilose; involucre up to c. 1.5 cm in diam., subglobose with a ±conic receptacle. Involucral bracts in ±2 rows; outer up to 3 mm long, narrowly ovate, acute or acuminate, pubescent, longitudinally 3-nerved; inner somewhat shorter and narrower than the outer, glabrescent; receptacular paleae up to 1 cm long in fruit, shorter at anthesis, membranous, obovate, truncate-emarginate and caudate at the apex, glabrescent. Ligule of ray florets white, up to 1.5 cm long, narrowly elliptic, minutely 3-denticulate at the apex, dorsally puberulent; tube c. 1 mm long, pubescent. Disk florets c. 4.5 mm long, densely pubescent. Achenes black, c. 3.5 mm long (perhaps immature), somewhat bilaterally compressed, obovate, 4-ribbed, glabrous, narrowed to a very short neck at the apex.
