Climbing shrubs or lianas with white latex. Leaves (sub-)opposite, colleters absent but glands present near base of petiole; blade with domatia in some vein axils. Inflorescence terminal, thyrsoid, many-flowered; bracts sepal-like or leafy. Flowers 5-merous. Sepals imbricate, connate at the base, ciliate. Corolla tube with 5 external pockets appearing as thickenings inside, from about half the length to the base of the lobes; tube glabrous inside except for tufts of hairs alternating with the stamens; lobes in bud contorted, overlapping to the right, slightly ciliate. Stamens included, connivent into a cone; anthers with penicellate hairs at the apex, at both tips with a subglobose thickening up to 0.1 mm in diameter, between the tails on the connective an orbicular patch, the retinacle, with long hairs along the margin adhering to the pistil head. Ovary semi-inferior, carpels two, connate at the extreme base, entirely or apically densely pubescent; disk present, adnate to the ovary at the base, composed of a ring and 5 lobes, alternating with the stamens; style obconical to cylindrical; pistil head composed of a slightly 5-winged upper and a cylindrical lower portion to which 5 retinacles adhere. Fruits pendulous, of two woody follicles, connate at the extreme base, dehiscent adaxially. Seeds attached to the adaxial side of the fruit, flat, elliptic to ovate; coma directed towards the apex of fruit.
