Characteristics

Small trees or shrubs. Leaves very oblique at the base, serrate; stipules linear. Flowers supra-axillary, in 2–3(–?4)-flowered fascicles or solitary. Sepals 5, long-acuminate with filiform tips which form 5 apical tails in the buds. Petals 5(–?7), obovate with short claws. Ovary superior, (?3–)5–7-locular, surrounded by an elevation of the receptacle which is densely glandular-pilose around the margin; ovules very numerous, minute; stigma sessile, thick, coarsely ridged. Berry usually 6-locular with numerous small seeds immersed in pulp.
