Characteristics

Perennial, rigid, usually branched shrub, pubescent on young parts, 0.2-2.4 m high. Leaves sessile, fascicled, lanceolate-attenuate, channelled, often ciliate, pungent (sharply spine-tipped). Flowers pink, purple or white, side petals sometimes white, on short pedicels, axillary. Sepals elliptical, ciliate, inner pair 1/2 as long as side petals. Side petals spathulate, much longer than carina. Flowering time Oct.-Dec. Fruit a capsule, with elongate, slender horns. Seed almost globose.
