Characteristics

Perennial shrub or dwarf shrub, stems rough, rarely villous, 0.4-1.2 m high. Leaves fasciculate or solitary, rigid, linear-narrowly elliptical, flat or slightly channelled, spine-tipped. Bracts concave, broadly oblong, apiculate, ciliolate. Flowers sessile, usually white, rarely pink. Sepals elliptical, apiculate, ciliate, midrib prominent, outer pair concave, inner pair almost flat, ± as long as side petals. Side petals widest near middle, shorter than carina. Flowering time Sept.-July. Fruit a broad capsule, tapering horns as long as or shorter than capsule. Seed oblong, hispid.
