Species

Angiosperms > Fabales > Polygalaceae > Muraltia

Characteristics

An erect shrub, 40 cm high or less, with slender branches. Young stems sparsely covered with very short curled hairs. Leaves fasciculate, straight, somewhat crowded, spine-tipped: the primary 6.0-9.0 mm long, linear-subulate, flat above, somewhat keeled below, glabrous, sparsely and shortly ciliate: the secondary variable in length, narrowing at the base but otherwise similar to the primary. Bracts 0.6-0.8 mm long, orbicular or ovate, concave, obtuse, sometimes mucronate, glabrous. Flowers 7-0-8-0 mm long, pink, very shortly pedicellate. Sepals glabrous, acuminate: the outer ovate, concave: the inner elliptical, almost flat, rather less than half the length of the side petals. Side petals linear-lanceolate, tapering to an acute apex, longer than the carina. Claw of the carina a little shorter than the limb: the line of attachment of the crest short, almost vertical; the width of the crest somewhat less than the length of the carina, the upper and lower lobes similar. Ovary almost glabrous, with slender erect horns: the style slender, the anterior branch small, the posterior long, more or less at right angles to the style, the stigma oblique. Capsule sparsely hispid above, the slender horns as long as or a little longer than the capsule. Seed ellipsoidal, hispid, the caruncle with short membranous lobes.
