Characteristics

A spreading much branched shrub up to 60 cm high. Young stems puberulous, becoming rather rough later. Leaves fasciculate or solitary the internodes usually conspicuous: the primary 7.0-12.0 mm long, linear or linear-lanceolate, acute, spine-tipped, uncinate, flat or occasionally slightly channelled near the apex, more or less glabrous, the margin scabrous, the midrib prominent below: the secondary similar but smaller. Bracts 1.4-1.6 mm long, oblong or broadly ovate, concave, obtuse, ciliolate. Flowers 5.0-7.0 mm long, white or pale pink, sessile. Sepals elliptical, obtuse or sub-acute, minutely apiculate, ciliate, the midrib prominent, the lateral veins visible: the outer concave: the inner larger, almost flat, about two-thirds as long as the side petals. Side petals linear, very slightly widened near the middle, obtuse, shorter than the carina. Claw of the carina about as long as the limb, the limb with a spongy swelling on either side: the line of attachment of the crest oblique, the width of the crest slightly greater than the length of the carina, the upper lobes larger than the lower. Ovary hispid above, the horns tapering: the anterior style branch small, the posterior rather long, the stigma oblique. Capsule broad, sparsely and minutely hispid, the tapering flat horns longer than the capsule. Seed oblong, softly and sparsely hairy, the caruncle with well-developed and oblique membranous lobes on the adaxial side.
