Characteristics

An undershrub, 15.0-20.0 cm high, branching chiefly near the base. Young stems hispid or setose. Leaves fasciculate, crowded or somewhat distant, setose along the thickened margin and on the midrib below, glabrous elsewhere, the terminal spine hardened, uncinate: primary leaves 7.0-10.0 mm long, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate: secondary leaves as long as or slightly shorter than the primary, linear-lanceolate, much narrowed at the base. Bracts 0.8-0.9 mm long, oblong, obtuse, toothed at the apex, scarcely concave. Flowers 4.5-5.0 mm long, pink, almost sessile. Sepals glabrous, ciliate, acute, mucronate, the mucro usually slightly reflexed: the outer ovate, somewhat concave, the anterior the shortest, the inner narrowly elliptical, as long as the posterior outer sepal, about two-fifths as long as the side petals. Side petals shorter than the carina, linear, obtuse, widest a little above the middle. Claw of the carina about as long as the limb: the line of attachment of the crest vertical, reaching almost to the top of the carina, the width of the crest much less than the length of the carina, the upper and lower lobes somewhat similar. Ovary hirsute above, the horns almost hidden by the long hairs: the anterior style branch small, the posterior well developed, at right angles to the style. Capsule hispid, rather broad, but in most cases only one chamber fertile, the slender tapering horns usually shorter than the capsule. Seed almost globose, hispidulous, the caruncle with two small oblique membranous lobes.
