Characteristics

Bulbous perennial herbs. Roots fibrous. Leaves several, basal, linear, annual. Scape slender, simple, solid. Flowers many in a terminal raceme, the lower bisexual, the upper sterile; a bract subtending each flower. Perianth tubular, regular, urceolate to globose, constricted below shortly 6-lobed apex, blue; corona absent. Stamens 6, inserted on perianth, included; filaments terete, glabrous; anthers dehiscing by slits, introrse. Ovary superior, 3-locular; ovules 2 per locule; placentation axile. Fruit a loculicidal capsule with angular valves, the perianth caducous. Seeds 1 or 2 per locule, black.
