Characteristics

Tufted perennial herb. Bulb tunics dark brown. Leaves 10–40 cm long, 1.5–8 mm wide, channelled to subterete. Scape to c. 30 cm long; raceme crowded, 2–6 cm long; flowers scented, pendent to patent; corolla of fertile flowers ovoid to oblong-urceolate or cylindric, 3.5–7.5 mm long, blackish blue with short, white lobes; sterile flowers at apex smaller and paler than fertile flowers. Capsule ovoid to obovoid, 3-angled, 5–10 mm long.

The bulbs or roots have a slightly bitter flavour. They are eaten. The flowers are sprinkled over pureed rhubarb to add flavour. The stalk of the flower is eaten raw as a snack.
