Characteristics

They are shiny and dark green above and pale underneath. Male and female flowers are on separate plants. Male flowers are in a cluster in the axils of leaves or on woody swellings. The fruit is narrowly oval and 2-3 cm long by 2 cm wide. They are brown and at first have a covering of short hairs. The seeds are shiny and black. These have a red aril or fleshy layer around them.
