Characteristics

Plants frequently forming clumps. Leaves flat, to 50 cm long, 5-15 mm wide, ±glaucous. Scape 20-50 cm long, compressed with 2 prominent edges. Flower solitary, usually oblique; pedicel 0.5-1.5 cm long, sheathed by spathe. Perianth lobes ovate, 2-4 cm long, yellow, spreading; tube conical, c. 1.5 cm long; corona trumpet-shaped, 2-4 cm long, with margin recurved, irregularly crenate-undulate, usually darker yellow than perianth lobes. Stamens included in corona, ±equal; anthers sub-basifixed. Capsule obovoid or subglobose, 10-25 mm long.

Scape 20-40 cm high, compressed, with 2 prominent edges. Leaves ± glaucous, flat. Flower solitary, fragrant, drooping to nearly horizontal; pedicel short, deflexed, tube broadly obconic; lobes > tube, light yellow, ascending; corona ± = lobes, deep yellow, margin scarcely expanding or spreading, irregularly cut into numerous short, dentate, subimbricate lobules.
Scape 2–4 dm, about equaling the lvs; fls yellow, solitary, horizontal, 4–6 (in cult. to 10) cm wide; corona about as long as the tep, usually frilled at the margin; 2n mostly =14, 28. Native of Europe, occasionally escaped from cult. into moist meadows in our range. Spring.
