Characteristics

Plants forming large clumps. Leaves flat to channelled, to 60 cm long, 5-25 mm wide, ±glaucous. Scape usually longer than leaves, compressed. Flowers 4-10 per scape, sometimes more, oblique to nodding, usually strongly fragrant; pedicels unequal, 1-7 cm long, ±sheathed by spathe. Perianth lobes ovate to broadly ovate, 1.5-2.5 cm long, white or yellow, spreading; tube narrowly cylindrical, 1.5-2 cm long; corona cup-shaped, c. 0.5 cm long, with margin variously irregularly crenate-undulate, yellow or orange, usually darker than perianth lobes. Stamens with upper whorl exserted from perianth tube and included in corona; anthers dorsifixed. Capsule ovoid, c. 1.5 cm long.

Bulbs ovoid, 4–6 × 3–5 cm, tunic pale to dark brown. Leaves 4; blade flat, 25–35 cm × 8–15(–20) mm, glaucous. Inflorescences umbellate, 5–15-flowered, 25–35 cm; spathe pale brown, 4–6 cm, papery. Scape c. 30 cm high, compressed. Leaves glaucous, ± channelled. Flowers 4-8-(20) per scape, usually fragrant, oblique, horizontal or nodding; pedicels long; tube narrow-cylindric, greenish; lobes < tube, white; corona ¼-½ length of lobes, cup-shaped, lemon-yellow or orange, margin entire.

Usage

The flowering shoot is eaten blanched and seasoned with oil, lemon and salt. They are also cooked with dried broad beans. The leaves have an onion flavour and are cooked with grounded hazel-nuts.
