Characteristics

Plants to c. 0.8 m tall, shortly rhizomatous. Leaves: sheaths finely ribbed, glabrous; ligule to c. 1 mm long, obtuse; blade flat to loosely convolute, 1.5–2 mm wide. Inflorescence often only partially exserted when young, 12–18 cm long, ±contracted. Glumes acuminate, 3–5-nerved; lower glume 14–18 mm long; upper glume 14–17 mm long. Callus 1.7–2 mm long, weakly bent, with white hairs to 0.5 mm long. Lemma 5.5–7.5 mm long, with midnerve obvious, scabrous with crystalline tubercles; corona 3.5–5 mm long, membranous, fimbriate; awn 40–80 mm long, usually weakly twice-geniculate, with column 20–25 mm long, antrorsely scabrous with spines to 0.15 mm long. Palea c. 25% of length of lemma.
