Characteristics

Plants to 0.8 m tall. Leaves: ligule 0.2–2 mm long, truncate; auricles thickened, tufted; blade expanded or loosely rolled, 1.5–4 mm wide, scabrous on margins, strongly ribbed, with abaxial surface smooth and glabrous to scaberulous. Inflorescence exserted, 15–25 cm long, contracted. Glumes acute to acuminate; lower glume 9 mm long; upper glume 7–8 mm long. Callus c. 0.7 mm long, curved, densely sericeous. Lemma c. 4 mm long, scabrous with crystalline tubercules, sericeous only on midrib; corona 0.5 mm long, with spines 0.2 mm long on upper margin; awn 35–40 mm long, twice-geniculate, minutely scabrous, with column c. 15 mm long. Palea 30–40% length of lemma.
