Characteristics

Plants to c. 0.8 m tall. Leaves: ligule 0.5–3 mm long, sometimes almost absent on lower leaves, truncate to obtuse, with tufts of hairs at sides; auricles thickened, sparsely hairy to glabrous; blade expanded to loosely inrolled, 2–2.5 mm wide, hirsute, with margins scabrous. Inflorescence exserted, 10–40 cm long, contracted. Glumes acuminate, 3-nerved, or upper glume sometimes 5-nerved; lower glume 14–18 mm long; upper glume 10–18 mm long. Callus 2.5–3.5 mm long, weakly bent at tip, densely sericeous. Lemma 6–10 mm long, coarsely scabrous with crystalline tubercules; corona c. 1.5 mm long, with spines c. 0.5 mm long on upper margin; awn 41–85 mm long, twice-or thrice-geniculate, with scabrous to pubescent column 25–55 mm long. Palea 20–25% length of lemma.
