Characteristics

Loosely or densely tufted perennials, erect or scrambling (not in Australia), with pachymorph rhizomes. Culms woody and persistent, with 1 primary branch per mid-culm node. Leaves: ligule an unfringed or bristled membrane; blade rolled in bud, pseudopetiolate, not cross-veined. Inflorescences indefinite, with pseudospikelets in clusters of 4–6. Pseudospikelets laterally compressed, disarticulating above glumes and between florets, with 3–12 bisexual florets, sometimes with sterile florets above. Glumes 2 or 3, unequal or ±equal, shorter than spikelets, acute, mucronate, keeled, 5–7-nerved. Bisexual florets: lemma mucronate or awned, not keeled; stamens 6; ovary umbonate; stigmas 3.
