Calyx-tube cyathiform, concrescent with the carpels in fruit, surrounded by 2–3 series of inconspicuous spinules, ebracteolate; calyx-lobes 5, narrowly oblong-acute.
Carpels 10, verticillate; styles 10, free, persistent in fruit; stigmas capitate; ovule solitary, pendulous.
Low-growing annual herbs with somewhat woody stems, diffusely to densely branched, woolly-tomentose.
Petals 5, large, with convolute aestivation, inserted at the mouth of the calyx-tube, spreading.
Stamens 10, inserted with the petals; filaments filiform.
Flowers solitary, axillary, showy.
Seeds solitary in each locule.
