Dioecious climbing perennial herbs, woody at base, glabrous. Tendrils 2-branched. Leaves trifoliolate, petiolate; leaflets more or less equal, ovate to lanceolate, entire or sinuate-dentate, obtuse or acute, mucronate, petiolulate; lateral leaflets oblique or lobed at base. Male flowers in axillary racemes, the racemes occasionally paired or dichotomous; hypanthium shallow, broadly campanulate; calyx 5-lobed, the lobes triangular; corolla deeply 5-lobed, the lobes ovate, yellow; stamens 3, inserted towards base of hypanthium; connective broad; anthers connivent, two bilocular, one unilocular; locules flexuose, triplicate; disc absent. Female flowers solitary; perianth similar to male, usually larger; staminodes 5; ovary ellipsoidal; ovules many; style thick; stigmas 3, spreading, flexuose; disc absent. Fruit fleshy, firm-skinned, ellipsoidal. Seeds many, turgid, ovoid, truncate, smooth.
