Characteristics

Plant biennial, generally ca 1 m tall: stems sparsely to densely pubescent with some fine appressed and some coarser spreading hairs, green in upper parts, reddish below, the papillae over green portions of the stem not red. Cauline leaves lance-ovate, short-petioled, sinuate-denticulate, acuminate, short-pubescent above and beneath, plane, mostly ca 3-10 cm long, 13 cm wide, gradually reduced upward into leafy bracts. Inflorescence commonly 2-3(-4) dm long, with few to several short branches; bracts from lance-linear and 0.5-1.5 cm long to broader and more leaflike, persistent; hypanthium slender, subglabrous with sparse gland-tipped hairs and ca 4 cm long; sepals sparsely glandular-pilosiuscule, 2.5-3.5 cm long, with terminal subulate tips 4-8 mm long and ± pubescent; petals 3-4 cm long, yellow, the flowers opening in the late afternoon: anthers 8-10 mm long; stigma with spreading lobes 7-10 mm long. Capsule subglabrous, 3.5-4 mm thick, 2.5-3 cm long, relatively firm-walled, tapering toward apex; seeds angled, ca 1 mm long.
