Annual or biennial herb, to c. 2 m high. Stems numerous, curved, densely villous and with shorter glandular hairs. Basal leaves rosetted, obovate to oblanceolate, to c. 18 cm long and 3.5 cm wide; cauline leaves usually ovate-elliptic, usually 2–4 cm long, serrate, acute, and often broad-based. Flowers solitary in upper axils, subtending leaves sometimes reduced and bract-like. Hypanthium slender, to 10 cm long. Sepals usually 2–2.5 cm long. Petals 2–3 cm long, yellow, often red-based, ageing dark red. Capsule cylindrical, somewhat curved, c. 3–4 cm long, 3–4 mm wide, villous.
