Characteristics

Palm to 20 m tall; trunk to 45 cm diam. Leaves 8–15, to 6 m long. Pinnae to c. 110 each side of rachis, to 100 cm long, acuminate, dark green adaxially, with silver-bronze felt-like indumentum abaxially. Inflorescences to 120 cm long; axes greenish cream; peduncle basally winged, to 75 cm long; prophyll apically open, split adaxially; peduncular bracts keeled, inserted at 15–30 cm intervals along peduncle; staminate inflorescence with c. 70 first order branches; pistillate inflorescence with c. 40 first order branches. Staminate flowers cream; pedicels to 1.2 mm long; sepals to 1 mm long; petals to 6 mm long; stamens slightly longer than petals; pistillode to 1.2 mm long. Pistillate flowers similar to staminate; ovary 3-lobed, to 2 mm high, to 3.5 mm wide. Fruit to 40 mm diam., yellow; pedicels to 3 mm long; mesocarp to 3 mm thick, pulpy, whitish. Seed to 34 mm diam., black.
