Characteristics

Solitary, erect, dioecious palm. Trunk moderate; internodes conspicuous. Leaves paripinnate, marcescent; leaf bases splitting opposite petiole. Pinnae linear, regularly arranged in a single plane. Inflorescences interfoliar, staminate and pistillate similar, branched to 4 orders; prophyll short, held within leaf bases, persistent; peduncle elongate; peduncular bracts 3–5, elongate, tubular, deciduous; rachis short; rachillae crowded and flexuose. Flowers solitary, pedicellate. Staminate flower symmetric; calyx and corolla distinct; stamens 6; anthers dorsifixed; filaments fleshy, short; pistillode short, trifid. Pistillate flowers similar to staminate flowers; staminodes stamen-like; gynoecium tricarpellate, triovulate; ovules hemianatropous. Fruit globose; stigmatic remains basal; endocarp obsolescent. Seed globose; endosperm with narrow central cavity; embryo lateral to subbasal.
