Characteristics

Perennial herb. Stems succulent, glabrous; distinctly 4-angled; sprawling; pale green with dull purple blotches. Leaves with leaf rudiments acute, minute. Flowers: inflorescence with 3-26 flowers; outer horn of inner corona lobe ± erect, inner horn laterally compressed, outer corona lobes ± subquadrate, sometimes wider than long; corolla without tube, 35-65 mm wide, strong foul-smelling odour, lobes with dark maroon, marginal vibratile hairs, mainly yellow or mustard-coloured, rarely darker or orange; Dec.-Feb. Fruit a follicle.
