Characteristics

Climber or trailer to 3 m.; stems rough with brownish hairs.. Leaf-blade triangular-, ovate-, broadly ovate-or reniform-cordate in outline, slightly sinuate-toothed, rarely sinuate-lobulate, acute or subobtuse and apiculate, rough-hairy, 22–98 mm. long, 30–79 mm. broad, unlobed or usually palmately ± 3–5-lobed; lobes triangular (rarely rounded), with the central largest; petiole ± rough-hairy with brown hairs, 24–115 mm. long.. Male flowers in groups of 2–5; pedicels 2–16 mm. long; receptacle-tube campanulate-cylindrical, with a few brown hairs externally, 3–6.5 mm. long; lobes filiform, 1–3 mm. long; petals pale yellow or cream, rounded, apiculate, 4–7.5 mm. long, 2.5–4 mm. broad, united in lower quarter.. Female flowers solitary on 3.5–9 mm. long stalks; ovary green, ellipsoid, obscurely tuberculate, brownish-bristly, 4.5–8 mm. long, 2.5–4.5 mm. across; receptacle-tube 2–4 mm. long; lobes filiform, 1.5–6 mm. long; petals 5–11 mm. long, 2.5–4 mm. across, united in lower quarter.. Fruit on an 8–20 mm. long stalk, shortly ovoid or subglobose, 15–27 mm. long, 13–21 mm. across, bristly-hairy and with ± 8 longitudinal rows of bristly-hairy tubercles (often with smaller tubercles interspersed), green to greenish-white with pale apex, expelling seeds from the basal scar..
