Characteristics

Rather small climbers; stems annual, herbaceous. Leaves simple, palmately lobed, petiolate. Tendrils simple. Flowers small, yellow, monoecious. Male flowers in few-flowered sessile groups, pedicellate; receptacle-tube cylindrical-campanulate; lobes small, filiform; petals united below; stamens 3, 2 double 2-thecous, 1 single 1-thecous, shortly inserted on the tube; filaments and anthers free; connective shortly produced apically; thecae straight; disk basal, subglobose, free from the tube. Female flowers solitary, stalked; ovary bristly, obscurely tuberculate; ovules many, horizontal; perianth as in ♂ flower; staminodes 3, subulate, inserted on the tube; disk annular, surrounding base of style; stigma 3-lobed. Fruit rather small, ± ovoid, fleshy, rather firm-walled, bristly-hairy, ornamented with longitudinal rows of bristly tubercles with smaller tubercles interspersed, green or greenish-white when ripe.
