Ornithoglossum viride W.T.Aiton

Species

Angiosperms > Liliales > Colchicaceae > Ornithoglossum

Characteristics

Corm ovoid-pyriform or broadly rounded-oblong, 0.5-2 cm long, usually with 1 or 2 lateral lobes, with brown tunics not produced into a basal neck; lobes up to 4 cm long and 3-5 mm broad, ± terete, spreading horizontally or somewhat descending. Cataphyll usually absent in mature plants, when present apically dilated, subtruncate and mucronate. Stem simple or branched (with up to 6 flowering branches); underground portion thin and slender, sometimes only ca. 1 mm in diam., seldom stout and up to 4 mm in diam. at the narrowest part; aerial portion 5-30 cm long, striate-sulcate from the decurrent leaf-bases. Leaves 2-3, linear-lanceolate, erecto-patent-spreading and often arcuately recurved, 5-25 cm long, 0.3-2 cm wide, long-acuminate, sometimes very attenuated. Raceme usually overtopping the leaves, up to ca. 18-flowered and 20 cm long, but usually fewer-flowered and shorter. Bracts suberect, ovate-lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, 1-10(-15) cm long, 0.2-2 cm wide, leaf-like and often broader than the leaves, usually up to half the length of the pedicels, but sometimes longer, apically acute or somewhat cuspidate. Pedicels spreading and apically recurved, sometimes eventually reflexed, 1.5-6(-7.5) cm long, slender. Perianth actinomorphic with all segments becoming spreading-reflexed, 0.8-2.5 cm in diam. Tepals 5.5-12(-15) mm long; claw 1 mm long or less, not distinctly off-set from the blade; blade linear-lanceolate, 5-11(-14) mm long, 1.5-2.5(-3.5) mm wide basally, indistinctly 5-10-veined, adaxially green with maroon edges, or dark reddish-brown, abaxially dull greyish-brown; nectary a small pouch or pocket at the base of the tepal blade, distinctly narrower than the tepal, sometimes mouth-shaped with lip-like margins. Filaments arcuate-recurved, 2.5-4.5 mm long, greenish-yellow, apically sometimes with a pale purplish tinge. Anthers oblong, straight or slightly curved, 0.8-1.2 mm long, 0.4-0.5 mm wide, greenish-yellow (drying brown). Styles 3-5 mm long, sinuate, greenish-yellow, with an oblong apical stigma. Ovary oblong-rounded, greenish-yellow. Capsule rounded-oblong, short, 0.5-3 cm long, 0.5-1.5 cm broad. Seeds globose or subglobose, 2-3 mm in diam., distinctly rugose, glossy, medium or dark brown; seed surface minutely and densely punctate-areolate ('micro-scrobiculate-colliculate' at high magnification); raphe forming an irregular keel or short wing ca. 0.5(-1) mm high, along 1/3-1/2 of the seed circumference. Chalaza somewhat protruding and wart-like or sometimes indistinct or impressed.
