Spikes curved, flexuous or coiled, rarely straight, up to 8 cm. long, 1 mm. wide; rhachis herbaceous, fracturing at the base or from the apex, ultimately into segments of 1–2 spikelets.. Spikelets in subopposite or adjacent ranks, superficially embedded; lower glume 0.5 mm. long, truncate; upper glume (5–)6–21 mm. long (including the awn), acuminate or drawn out into a flexuous awn, (1–)3-nerved; lemma elliptic-oblong, (1.5–)2–3 mm. long, 3-nerved, the mucro up to 0.5 mm. long..
