Characteristics

An erect or diffuse shrublet with pubescent branchlets, sometimes reaching 1 m. high, but the smaller plants are often decumbent and straggling. Leaves imbricate, digitately trifoliolate: leaflets obovate or cuneate-obovate, recurved-mucronate, sparsely ciliate, 1-2 cm long, the medial largest. Stipules obliquely ovate-lanceolate, membranous, veined, partly attached to the short petioles. Flowers about 1.3 cm long, in dense ovoid or globular heads 2-2.5 cm in diam., with large conspicuous ovate apiculate bracts. Calyx 1.1-1.2 cm long, hispid, the teeth apiculate. Standard purplish-blue, the wings paler: keel small, whitish, purple-tipped.
