Characteristics

Erect herb 0.45–1.2 m. tall, with pubescent stems.. Leaf-blades oblong-elliptic, 8–13 cm. long, 2.6–6 cm. wide, acute at the apex, narrowly cuneate at the base, very sparsely pubescent above, shortly bristly hairy on the venation beneath; lateral nerves 9–12 on each side, prominent beneath, the tertiary venation ± prominent and reticulate; petiole 0–2 mm. long; stipules with ± 3 setae up to 6 mm. long.. Flowers dimorphic, in a spike (6–)29–35 cm. long; peduncle 5–12 cm. long.. Calyx-tube 1–5 mm. long; lobes unequal, the foliaceous ones oblong, 1–1.4 cm. long, 1–2 mm. wide, 3-nerved, bristly pubescent.. Corolla-tube red or white, 1.7–2.2 cm. long, dilated at the apex up to 3 mm. for 4 mm.; lobes white flushed pink or with 3 red lines, elliptic-oblong, 7–8 mm. long, 2.3–4 mm. wide, acute at the apex, narrowed to the base, pubescent outside on the central portion; throat-orifice purple or pink; style exserted 1.5–2.5 mm. in long-styled flowers; stigma-lobes up to 2 mm. long; in short-styled flowers the corolla-tube is more gradually dilated.. Fruits obovoid-oblong, 5–6 mm. long, 3–4 mm. wide, ribbed.
