Characteristics

Scandent shrub up to 3–5 m. long, rooting at the lower nodes and between them; roots very fine, up to 20 cm. long; stems with 2 lines of short adpressed hairs above, glabrous below.. Leaf-blades ovate-lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, 3.6–10 cm. long, 1.1–4 cm. wide, acute to slightly acuminate at the apex, abruptly cuneate at the base, glabrous or very minutely pubescent near the midrib above, with minute adpressed hairs on the nerves beneath; petiole 0.7–2.3(–3.5) cm. long; stipules with 3–5 setae up to 3–4 mm. long from a short base.. Flowers not dimorphic, in congested head-like inflorescences 2–3 cm. wide, which do not become spike-like in the fruiting stage.. Calyx-tube oblong, 2.5–2.7 mm. long, 0.9–1.3 mm. wide, tomentose; lobes unequal, 1–2 larger, elliptic-lanceolate, 6–10(–12) mm. long, 1.3–3(–5) mm. wide, acute, 3-nerved, 3–4 smaller, deltoid, linear or falcate, 2.5–7 mm. long, 0.75–1.5 mm. wide, with sessile colleters between the lobes.. Corolla crimson or bright carmine; tube 1.8–2.8(–3.2) cm. long, 0.5–1 mm. wide below, widening apically to ± 1.5 mm. for a distance of 2–3 mm., pubescent with short hairs; lobes elliptic-oblong, 5–9 mm. long, 2.5–5 mm. wide, mucronate at the tips which are inflexed and have long hairs externally, main part of lobes shortly hairy outside; throat hairy and hairs spreading on to the extreme base of the slightly connate corolla-lobes.. Stamens entirely included.. Style exserted 0.5–5 mm.; stigmas lanceolate, 0.8–1.2 mm. long.. Fruits oblong to ellipsoid-oblong, 7–10 mm. long, 3–5 mm. wide, glabrous, ribbed.. Seeds brown, angular, ± 0.5 mm. long.
