Characteristics

Leaves simple, stalked, alternate, obovate-elliptic or obovate-obtuse, emarginate, coriaceous, quite glabrous, reticulate above, paler and veined beneath; panicles terminal, abbreviate; branches erecto-patent, as well as the calyx puberulous; petals outwardly pubescent, 4 times longer than the obtuse, ciliolate calyx. Branches cicatrized and rugose, as in the preceding. Leaves 1.5-2 inches long, somewhat attenuate at base; petioles 2-3 lines long. Flowers 5-merous. Petals oblong, 3 lines long. Stamens shorter than the petals. Ovarium 1-locular, 1-ovuled. Styles deeply trifid, branches terete. Distinguished from the preceding by the leaves on both surfaces glabrous, the more compact (1-1.5 uncial) panicle, with larger flowers.
