Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Apocynaceae > Pachycarpus

Characteristics

Tuberous-rooted perennial, tuber as long as the stem or longer. Stem 200-500 mm tall, stout, erect, simple or branched from the base, puberulous or scabrous to sub-tomentose or villous. Leaves spreading; petiole 2-12 mm long, slightly winged or not; blade 26-112 x 8-30 mm, linear-lanceolate, or narrowly elliptic to ovate, oblong or rarely ± obovate, margins sometimes undulate, scabrid or pubescent, surfaces almost glabrous to densely pubescent. Inflorescence umbellate, 2-6(-9)-flowered, sessile at the nodes or the lowest usually pedunculate; peduncle up to 45 mm, hairy as the stem. Bracts 3.5-2.5 mm, linear or narrowly elliptic, acuminate, glabrous above, pubescent below, deciduous; pedicels 10-35(-45) mm, pubescent to subtomentose. Sepals 11-24 mm long, lanceolate or narrowly elliptic to ovate or broadly elliptic, acute to acuminate, glabrous above, thinly to densely pubescent below. Corolla 30-46 mm long, inflated globose, globose-urceolate or globose-campanulate, lobed for 1/2 to 2/3 its length, entirely yellow or lightly to heavily spotted dark purple-brown, glabrous or sometimes pubescent outside towards the tips of the lobes; lobes 10-28 mm long, ovate to broadly elliptic or suborbicular, acute, tips recurved. Corona lobes 13-24 mm long, linear, linear-lanceolate or sometimes spathulate, tips sharply incurved, keels 2, contiguous, subdeltoid, extending from the base to half or more than half the length of the lobe, 7-15 mm long, 1-5 mm high at the base, shorter than, equal to, or exceeding the level of the top of the anther wings, both keels and corona lobes yellow with purple-brown spots. Anther appendages 1.5-2 mm long, broadly ovate to oblong, apex acute or acuminate, indexed over the style apex; wings 2.5-5 mm long, vertical or oblique, outer surface ± straight or slightly concave. Follicle 90-120 mm long, narrowly ovoid, 6-7-winged, glabrous.
More
Perennial, geophytic herb, 200-500 mm long; stems 1 or 2, decumbent or erect, unbranched. Leaves spreading, lanceolate to oblong, 41-89 x 11-32 mm, base rounded to shortly attenuate, apex acute to acuminate; petioles 2-12 mm long. Inflorescences 1-6-flowered. Corolla globose-campanulate, 38-52 mm in diam., greenish yellow, purple-brown-spotted; lobes halfway free, 16-36 x 19-25 mm. Corona pale greenish mauve-purple-marked; lobes ligulate from base with 2 contiguous ridges/wings, upcurved towards tip, 4-6 mm high, 12-19 mm long. Flowering time Nov.-Apr. Follicles ellipsoid, glabrous, 6-or 7-winged; pedicels twisted.
